Review: Cascadia — A Nature-Themed, Calm yet Clever Strategy Game

In the gentle embrace of nature, a harmless war begins — Cascadia.
Even the name sounds calming, doesn’t it? Forests, mountains, rivers, bears, deer… Yes, the theme feels straight out of a National Geographic documentary. But don’t be fooled. While Cascadia looks like a peaceful, nature-loving puzzle game on the surface, beneath that calm exterior lurk strategy beasts quietly hunting for victory points.

When you open the box, you’re greeted by soothing colors, soft illustrations, and habitat tiles that seem to whisper, “I’m here to bring you peace.” But the fox, bear, deer, and salmon tokens inside tell a different story:
“We’ll score the points — but only if you place us correctly.”

Basic Game Information

  • Player Count: 1–4 players (Excellent solo mode!)
    Playtime: 30–45 minutes
    Genre: Tile Drafting, Pattern Building
Difficulty Level: Easy to learn, rich in depth

Cascadia is a game where each player develops their own personal slice of nature, building habitats from tiles and creating ecosystems using animal tokens. Every choice matters—each decision requires balancing short-term gains with long-term scoring plans, making the game deceptively thoughtful beneath its calm surface.

How Is It Played? – Placing the Bear in the Right Spot Is an Art

  1. How Is It Played? – Placing the Bear in the Right Spot Is an Art

In the center of the table, there are 4 habitat tile + animal token pairs available.

    It’s your turn:
You choose one pair and place the habitat tile into your own area.

Then you place the animal token onto a suitable spot on that habitat. Each animal has very clear preferences:

    • Bears: Like to hang out in groups (strong “family visit” culture).

    • Eagles: Score points by being alone and distant (lonely and dramatic).

    • Foxes: Crave variety around them (true social butterflies).

    • Deer: Form long chains of friendship (family bonds are everything).

    • Salmon: Swim upstream and want long migration chains.

As rounds pass, new tiles and animals appear, and your personal landscape keeps expanding.

When the game ends, points are scored from animals and habitats.
The highest score becomes the ruler of Cascadia. (Or queen. Or the cleverest one.)

    Strategy and Silent Competition

The charm of Cascadia lies in its deceptively simple surface and the constant inner voice saying, “Why did I build this like that?”
Since every animal scores differently, there’s always a tiny mental spreadsheet running in your head:

    • Should I extend that deer chain?

    • Can I surround the fox with enough variety?

    • When will that bear family finally be complete?

And while you’re peacefully building your own habitat, you can’t help but glance at others:

Hmm… they’re about to complete a 3-eagle chain. If I take that tile, can I mess things up just a bit?

That’s where the sweetest competition lives:
    quietly sabotaging other people’s plans.

Who Will Love It — and Who Might Not

Beginners: Easy to learn, smooth to play.
Strategy lovers: Small decisions lead to big outcomes.
Nature fans: Birds, deer, fish… pure ecosystem-building joy.
Solo players: Fantastic for chasing high scores on your own.

Action seekers: No battles, explosions, or combat here.
High-interaction fans: Everyone mostly works in their own space.
Hardcore strategy addicts: It has depth, but it’s not Scythe.

Expansions: A Wilder Nature Is Coming

An expansion called Wilds of Cascadia is on the way, bringing more animals, habitats, and tactical options. Nature is still growing.
